healthy kids

Our kids benefit tremendously from using natural versus chemical. That's a no brainer. Let's start them out in life by teaching them to care naturally for their bodies and learn to use the tools that can not only keep them healthy, but give their bodies support in whatever they may face in the future.

keep kids healthy

We can't just use essential oils and expect all to be well. There's way more to their health and we need to build a good solid foundation for our children.
  1. Nutrition - eating right is foundational. What we eat either feeds disease or fights disease. Yes, it depends on our budgets, lifestyles, etc., but we can do our best and let the rest be in God's hands. Sugar and processed foods are the worst. Try to live in balance and teach your kids to make good choices. Clean healthy eating of different foods groups is best, trying to eat foods as close to nature as possible. Grab an apple with peanut butter, banana, cucumber with ranch, instead of the goldfish crackers. Things like that. One step at a time.
  2. Exercise - move that body. Most children are not obese, but there are more in this generation than before. Bottom line, children should not be overweight unless they have some kind of chemical imbalance or dysfunctional thyroid, and those things are not very common. The problem is that our kids are eating junk and sitting around on devices, living a sedentary lifestyle. So we just need less of that and more walks, bike rides, playing tag, trip to the swimming pool, nature hikes, outside time.
  3. Sleep - super important. Kids are staying up too late and getting up early for school, childcare, etc. And we wonder why they can't pay attention, stay focused, or have bad attitudes. A good night's sleep can solve a lot of problems! Children under the age of 12 need to get 12 hours of sleep each night. Teens need at least 9 hours. Don't let your teens go to bed with their phones. Maybe try having a docking station where they plug in their devices at night and leave it there. Create a routine of downtime before bed - do devotionals, read books, etc. It's recommended for everyone to get off the devices an hour before sleeping anyway. Your brain needs to shut down properly and produce the right hormones for sleep. We have a whole generation that's suffering because of this and it's only going to get worse because technology gets more and more addicting.
  4. Toxic load - we have to cut down on the junk that's on our kids. I'm talking lotions, soaps, deodorant, hand sanitizers, and more. We can't control anything going on outside of our homes, but in our own home we can make a difference.
So how do we support our kiddos and keep them healthy with essential oils?
  • Supplements - the A2Z chewable is a multi vitamin antioxidant blend and has their daily dose of vitamins & minerals. The IQ Mega is the brain food - the omega 6, 3, 9's. It's well balanced and has the wild orange essential oil in it, so it's easy for kids to take. The Lifelong Vitality pack is for teens (and adults), and it's jammed packed with whole foods. (I did videos on it here and here.)
  • Diffuse - diffusing essential oils in the bedrooms, living room, etc., can get rid of smells, boost immune systems, and more. Diffusing in the safest way to use oils and is cost effective because the whole family is smelling it and getting the benefits. And your house will smell awesome, even if you have teenagers!
  • Topical - you can use essential oils topically for localized benefits like on the stomach for upsets or on body parts for growing pains. Always dilute essential oils with fractionated coconut oil (or other organic oils) for kids and babies. It also gives your oils a better spread and extra weight so the oils don't evaporate as fast, to give you more direct benefits.
  • Internal - it's safe for the kids. For example, put a drop of lemon or grapefruit in their water to clean their bodies out. Toxins get trapped in cells and the citrus oils can help empty it out of their cells. *I only stand behind doTERRA oils for internal use.*

top oils for kids

I went in depth on my favorite essential oils for kids & what to use them for in this video: Back to School
  • Lavender - the swiss army knife of essential oils. It soothes skin & burns, supports restful sleep, helps with itchy things like bug bites, combats seasonal threats like allergies, supports ear health (when ears are achy, put lavender & tea tree around their ear and apply a hot washrag, repeat as necessary), and so much more.
  • Peppermint - great to get your kids alert & focused when they're feeling sluggish. Put a few drops in your diffuser or a drop on your hands, cup them, and have them smell. It's also great for homework - for them to study, stay alert, focus. It's great for when you get fevers, coughs, and feel achy. (InTune and Balance are great for focus as well.)
  • Frankincense - king of the oils and is great for every body system. It also can be used with other oils to boost their effects. You can diffuse it every night, put it on the bottoms of their feet, put a drop on their toothbrushes every night or a drop under their tongue before bed. It's also a natural sedative, calming, and helps with so much.
  • Lemon - a great cleanser and has multiple uses. We want less toxic load for our kids, less runny noses, less drainage from colds/allergies, and less germs. This gives them nice sustained energy. Even if your kids are hyper from too much sugar or chemical imbalance, this can help them out. Essential oils are fabulous. Balanced immunity and alkalinity, which means our bodies are less acidic and less likely to get sick.
  • Tea tree - a huge fave with most moms, because kids always get scrapes. It's really good to help clean cuts and scrapes, does not burn, very gentle. We want less fungus, like athlete's foot, dandruff, even acne. Preteen/teens like to use this for acne. Less itching and bug bites, use on skin for support. It gives you peace of mind, like getting that letter from school saying there's lice and you know what to do. Keep girls' hair up, put tea tree on their brush and brush their hair daily, you can add it to shampoo as well. Great for immune systems and cleaning wounds, don't want infections.
  • Citrus bliss - put this oil in the diffuser or dilute it and rub on their spine. To help with the late afternoon slump or help with moods when they wake up. We want more happiness, right?
  • Helichrysum - the oil for healing. Anytime your kid falls down and gets a goose egg or bump their head, this is the oils you want. It stops bleeding, so it's great to put on the nose for nosebleeds, on bleeding cuts, etc. I could tell you some major stories of this oil! It's super gentle, doesn't burn or sting at all, and helps to clot blood.
  • Roman chamomile - gives us less cranky kids, less crying, and less sleeplessness. This is a great oil to dilute for babies and rub on the bottoms of their feet about 30 minutes before bed. It will give more contentment, more sleep, and more peace.
  • AromaTouch (and Deep Blue) - great for restless legs, growing pains, muscle aches, sports, achy legs from growth spurts, even braces. Just rub the AromaTouch on their jaw and gently massage it in - for braces being tightened or any dental work done. We want them to have more rest and recovering muscles. Rub their feet and spine with it at night. Plus, touch is a bonding experience in itself, so extra bonus.
  • TerraShield - we want less bites, less itching, more fun outdoors, and more peace of mind. This will help our kids to be able to run through the trees, jump in leaves, go camping, hiking, biking, to the lake...basically be outdoors without having to worry about getting eaten alive by mosquitoes or worried about ticks.
  • Purify - in case you don't know, doTERRA has partnered up with John Hopkins University and they have been doing loads of studies on doTERRA oils and the entire human genome. So there's about 20,000 genes paired up and tested against the oils to see how the body responds. Purify tested so well. Nothing was living in the presence of Purify. It was killing every virus, bacteria, fungus, and mold it was tested against. They were blown away by this! So we want less illness - you can use it with OnGuard (Which, by the way is a MUST have oil for the whole family - OnGuard has toothpaste, sanitizer spray, softgels, the whole works. We've had OnGuard in our house for over a decade!) or in place of it, less stinky shoes, less stinky cars. Diffuse it, clean with it, wipe down counters with it, put it in your laundry, use it as a bathroom air freshener.
